On Thursday the 16 February Jonno Proudfoot and the Real Meal Revolution team held the first Banting Workshop to an excited crowd in the Oaks Room at Newlands Cricket Ground.
The aim of the workshop was to teach Real Meal Revolutionaries how to:
- Achieve their Awesome weight quickly and without compromise.
- Save money by avoiding expensive supplements and medication.
- Conquer the weight-loss plateau and other dieting pitfalls.
- Discover non-food-related weight-loss techniques for their daily routine.
- Enjoy previously taboo foods while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
At the Real Meal Revolution, we believe our minds are one of the most powerful tools to achieve goals, especially when losing weight and keeping it off. Jonno explained that how, and why, one sets a goal can be the difference between success and failure. He introduced “The Summons,” which plays an integral part in Banting 2.0, to the audience. To illustrate his point, he used his achievement of swimming 459kms from Mozambique to Madagascar, as an example of the steps to achieving one’s goals. For the swim, the way he set this goal ensured that there was no way he could back out of it, even if he wanted to.
Each workshop participant was coached through calculating their Awesome Weight and setting their own weight-loss goals, as Jonno went through the four phases of our new weight loss handbook, Banting 2.0. Each phase is presented as a how-to guide, designed to assist in achieving one’s specific health and weight loss goals.
Observation
Restoration
Transformation
Preservation
Not only were end goals set, but each participant also calculated the date on which they would arrive at their awesome weight.
Another important aspect of weight loss is to be aware of, and to make the right choices in, the food we eat. Jonno briefly explained the theory behind Banting and how Prof Noakes’ scientific discoveries had led to the initial concept of the original Real Meal Revolution cookbook. He described how he had wanted to follow an LCHF diet during his 459 km swim, and had approached Prof Noakes to collaborate in a recipe book project to raise funds for the epic swimming adventure and Operation Smile (through the Cipla Foundation, Miles for Smiles Initiative). Jonno’s delicious recipes in the first book were the culmination of this.
One can lose weight by eliminating sugar, wheat and gluten and refined seed oils from one’s diet. But, as we have since discovered, there is so much more to weight loss than initially meets the eye. Each individual is unique, and so any approach to weight loss is not simply a “one-size fits all.”
Banting 2.0 evolved organically from the original book as we discovered the experiences of the users who tracked their data in Real Meal Revolution’s Online Program. We learned how and why people were Banting, where they were struggling and answered the call for a step-by-step approach. We discovered, through our users, that Banting was, in fact, a phased process and special emphasis needed to be placed on each area.
THE NEW BANTING 2.0 PHASES
Observation - Focuses on getting to know yourself and your current relationship with food.
Restoration - Helps you restore the damage that eating a highly inflammatory diet of sugar and processed carbs has caused to your body.
Transformation - Allows you to lose the weight you want.
Preservation - Aims to keep the weight off and keep you healthy for the rest of your life.
